You know wut, thinkin about it.....I am glad EPRDF brought on the idea of ethnic federalism and abused the heck out of it at the same time. People got to experience division without Ethiopia falling apart. If the country was as centralized as it was during past governments in this year of 1998, all of today's cries and THE FUTURE's would have been about ethnic freedom and the likes. But the fact that we are going through that phase right now opens the way for a different kind of discussion in the future, I believe. A discussion that involves, "oh whatever, what are we gonna do separated from eachother....we have cursed eachother enough, we have fought enough, let's change course now....staying united has more advantages, whether economically or politically....etc"

Not that these discussions do not exist today, but they are limited to certain sects of our population.

All of a sudden, I feel like our future is bright. Do you?

P.S. Thats looking at the bigger picture.....the overall outcome of all the ups and downs. When it comes down to the nitty gritty staff, if you ask me, I smell danger. If there was a power vacuum, do I believe Ethiopians will live with eachother peacefully until some governemnt takes over (compared to the time between the departure of Dergue and take over of TPLF)? I doubt it. That has to worry us.

Ayadris new. But that is the new calling card of the TPLF/EPRDF. In fact, now my Tigrean relatives claim that they "have no choice" but support EPRDF because if
it loses power, they would be forsaken. This whole sickness is having a snowball effect. The more they lend blind allegiance to these morons, the more animosity they
create with the rest of the Ethiopian people.

Good point. Read Abraha Belai's article.....he makes gross claims in some places that he didn't provide evidences for, but he has points here and there. And there is a paragraph that describes exactly how I feel about the issue.

Here is the article:

Question of the day:

"The Tigreans had Aksum, but what could that mean to the Gurage? The Agew had Lalibela, but what could that mean to the Oromo? The Gonderes had castles, but what could that mean to the Wolayita?"

who said this?

Another question:

"Aksum... was built by both Semitic and Hamitic Ethiopians. It is therefore the pride of all Ethiopians. To question what the Gurage have to do with Aksum is to deny their historical contributions and to attempt to deprive them of a pride they share with other Ethiopians. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela were built predominantly by the Hamitic Agew as well as other Ethiopians including the Amhara and Tigre so that Christian Oromos and others would not go as far as Jerusalem for worship. For the Christian Oromo, Lalibela is their Jerusalem. For the non-Christian Kushitic or Hamitic Oromo, the churches of Lalibela are symbols of their pride, for they were envisaged and materialized by the Hamitic Emperor Lalibela. It is probably by realizing this among other reasons that the Hamitic Ahmed Grang who had destructed so many other churches previously, spared the churches of Lalibela from annihilation. Lalibela is the pride of all Ethiopians. To question whether the Oromo care for Lalibela is to suggest that the Oromo are foreigners."

Who said this in reply to the previous quote?

So, the ICU appointed the "terrorist" on America's "wanted" list to head their parliament?

Okay, we got Hamas in the middle east, a couple of America-hater socialists down there in Latin America, now this one. Okay people, watch out for the Mexican election this/next week? What are they saying about one of the guys running, again?

All this is the world's way of reacting to America's "am your god and your devil at the same time" attitude, I guess.

It's amazing how the EPRDF is obeying some of the wishes of the CUDP even after putting the entire leadership in prison. Look at the way the parliamentary procedures are being revised, a board composing opposition people appointed to head government medias, etc. Now, whether this is an honest move or not is another question, but the most important thing is: who made the EPRDF move like that? Who shook its foundation and made it think of all these reforms needed for one to be truly democratic? Now, they could also be doing all this in a misguided hope to earn redemption. There won't be redemption until they drop the fake charges and release political prisoners, an honest investigation to the illegal killings, have the person's responsible face justice, compensate the families, etc. Nobody should shake their blood-soaked hands and thats the end of it.

That being said, their sweat to prove themselves as "democratic" to the public and the international community may well be another victory for the CUD and those who supported the struggle for rights.

Kinijit's Eight Point Preconditions to Join Parliament

Points that have been "fulfilled" by EPRDF so far after imprisoning Kinijit leadership are highlighted.

1. The Election Board needs to be restructured and be able to operate independently.

2. All forms of media should be free and available to all political parties.

3. The legal system must be able to operate independently without any coercion from the ruling party.

4. An independent commission to be established to investigate the June 8, 2005 killings of innocent Ethiopians.

5. Ensure the police and armed forces do not get involved in politics and take sides.

6. Recent laws that have been passed at the concluding sessions of the last Parliament that deal with parliamentary procedures and governance of the City of Addis Ababa should be recended.

7. All political prisoners should be released, and opposition party offices that had been closed should be opened.

8. Establish an independent commission, that is acceptable to all parties, to follow up that the above mentioned issues are resolved on a timely manner.

4 and 1/2 points have been "fulfilled" so far by EPRDF. I believe there are more to come. One must wonder why Meles said "These are unacceptable proconditions" when Kinijit proposed them?!

I guess the imprisonment of the leaders was inevitable.
