Al-Amoudi offers 24 million USD to build US Embassy

4/22/2002 8:54:00 AM

Addis Ababa, April 22, 2002

Sheik Mohamed Hussien Al-Amoudi has offered close to 24 million USD to build a new structure planned to house the USAID, consular and public diplomacy sections of the United States Embassy.

Ever since the deadly terrorist attacks on US embassies in Nairobi and Dar el- Salaam in 1998, officials of the embassy here were anxious about these two sections found on the south bound of the Embassy's compound, adjacent to the main road.

Following the completion of the facility, USAID anticipated to relocate its Head Office from its current location, behind Bambis Supermarket, to the new building.

Not surprised that he is lending a hand to the U.S Embassy. First, it will help facilitate in dessimating the belief that he was somehow involved in funding Arab "terrorists". Second, he will broaden his already "good" relation already established with the American Embassy. What a great MIND!

Im pretty sure the US is paying for it, but Al-Amoudi's company is the contractor to build it.

Lets hope this reduces the hassle Ethiopians receive to get visas to the US. I want them to go to an emabassy and get treated decently but I some how doubt this is going to change that.

24 million USD is maybe, just maybe a little heavy in his pocket. This man is worth atleast 1 and 1/2 billion. "Money ain't a thing" with him. But,yes, 24 million on an embassy simply is too much.
